2009 turns to 2010 in Matagalpa

I never knew that in Matagalpa:

-Scarecrows (hombre/mujer viejo/a) are constructed, put on display and burned at 12am on New Year´s Eve.

-Rosquillas are popular cookies that are difficult and time-consuming to make.

-Dinner on New Year´s Eve is at 12am!

-Personal fireworks are permitted to say the least, and explode all hours of the night...especially midnight. The view of the city bursting with fireworks from the auditorium balcony at the Casa Materna was beautiful (and VERY LOUD).

Yesterday was a blue moon (two full moons in one month)! Kitty and I hiked to the top of a rock cluster that provides a 360 degree view of Matagalpa. The wind was blowing as the sun set over the mountains. We toasted to the completion of 2009 and our hopes and dreams for 2010.

¡Bienvenido, 2010! Tabula Rasa...
